FLAVOUR ORIGINS
The piña colada, which means literally “strained pineapple” in Spanish, is a classic cocktail with two versions that both originate in Puerto Rico. According to 19th century legend, the first was created by Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, reputedly to boost his crew’s morale. A century later, a modern iteration was created which today enjoys the status of being the island nation’s official drink.
The cocktail is made with a mixture of rum, cream of coconut or coconut milk and pineapple juice, which is then served with either blended or shaken ice. Popular garnishes are pineapple wedges, maraschino cherries, or both combined.
